Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate performance of pain management and perceived barriers of pain management among hospital nurses. Method: The study was conducted from April 1st 2011 to April 30th 2011 with 215 nurses working at two higher general hospitals in G city. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, 21 questions of performance of pain management and 10 of barriers of pain management. Using SPSS/WIN 17.0, data were analyzed by independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson`s Correlation coefficients. Results: A level of pain management performance was 3.06, ``moderate.`` The highest performance item was ``record and evaluate pain an hour after medication,`` as a score of 3.48. The average of barriers of pain management was 1.75, and the highest item was ``not enough time,`` as a score of 2.57. There were significant differences in performance of pain management by age, educational level, and education for pain management. There was significant difference in perceived barriers of pain management by age. Conclusion: Education for pain management should be considered to increase performance of pain management among nurses.
